A very sad day.


Lucy Bright Thatcher, 82, a lifelong resident of Lookout Mountain, died Monday, Feb. 7, 2011 after a brief illness.She was the daughter of the late Margaret White and Gardner Bright, both of Chattanooga. She was born Dec. 25, 1928.She was a graduate of Bright School and Girls Preparatory School. She attended the University of Chattanooga and graduated from Rollins College in Winter Park, Fla. After college she taught at Bright School and later wrote for the Chattanooga Times Society Department. In 1953 she married Joseph Wright Thatcher.Her interests included golf, a game she enjoyed and played all her life. She was an honorary member of the Chattanooga Womens Golf Association. Her other hobbies were bridge, reading, gardening, and walking her much-loved dogs. One of her real pleasures was watching her children and grandchildren participate in sports - soccer, baseball, golf, track and wrestling. She was a big fan of bluegrass music. Although not a vocalist, she was on occasion asked to sing with local bluegrass favorites "The Dismembered Tennesseans." Audiences cheered her renditions of "The Three Nights Experience" and "Chattanooga Choo Choo."Mrs. Thatcher was a longtime communicant of The Church of the Good Shepherd where she served as a Sunday school teacher and member of the Altar and Flower Guilds. She was a sustaining member of the Junior League and a member of the Garden Club of Lookout Mountain where she served as president. She also served as president of the East Fifth Street Day Care Center and was on the board of Bright School, the Chattanooga Symphony & Opera Association, and the American Red Cross. Mrs. Thatcher was the first woman to be elected to the Lookout Mountain Tennessee Town Commission. She served for six years as commissioner of parks and playgrounds, a position she thoroughly enjoyed.Happy memories of Lucy include family trips to Highlands, N.C. and Pawleys Island, S.C.Survivors include her husband, Joe Thatcher; brother, Fletcher Bright; sons, Joseph (Abe) Thatcher Jr., Robert (Alice) Thatcher and Thomas (Amy) Thatcher; daughter, Margaret (Jim) Thompson; grandchildren, Coleman (Christina) Thompson, Claytor (Candice) Thompson, Fletcher Thompson, Marlea Thompson, Caroline Thatcher, Laura Thatcher, Mary Lyddon Thatcher and Carson Thatcher; one great-grandchild, her namesake, Lucy Nicole Thompson; many beloved cousins, nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her loyal friend and companion, Betty Lawrence, of Lookout Mountain.She was preceded in death by two brothers, George Thomas Bright and James Gardner Bright Jr.; and sister, Ann Bright Govan. The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 10, in the fellowship hall of the Church of the Good Shepherd, 211 Franklin Road, Lookout Mountain. At 2:30 p.m., string musicians from the Chattanooga Symphony will provide a musical prelude in the church.Services will follow at the church at 3 p.m.Interment will be after the service in the Harriet Caldwell Memorial Garden at the church.Memorial contributions can be made to the Church of the Good Shepherd, the Bright School, or a charity of your choice.Arrangements by Wann Funeral Home.
